Financial Aspects of eSports

Largest e-Sport Games

There are more and more games that are being played competitively as we work through the years waiting for new games to be released. A few of the most popular e-Sports games are:

· Dota 2

· Counter-strike Global Offensive

· League of Legends

· Starcraft

· Fortnite

Each of these games are listed in order of how much money the prize pools offer for taking part in tournaments.

Prize Pools

Each tournament has different prize pools, some offering significantly more money than others. Dota 2 seems to always offer the highest prize pools with often prizes in the millions depending on your ranking.

During 1997 the first ever e-sports tournament was held in the United States. The game to begin the e-sports tournaments was none other than Quake (a first person shooter released in 1996) with an interesting prize to be given to the first place position. The winner of this tournament was gifted a Ferrari 328 that originally belonged to the head programmer of Quake.

Dota 2 Prize Pool Comparison

2013

Even on the release year of Dota 2 the available prize pool was a huge $2.8million, of which was distributed between the top 8 positions of the tournament.

2018

Five years after the release of Dota 2 the prize pools became much larger than what it was during its beginning year. During 2018 the prize pool was a whopping $25.5million distributed between the top 18 positions, with $11million going to first place.

Highest Paid e-Spots Player

For all of the games played in e-Sports, there comes many different people who take part in them. Some of these people are paid extremely large sums of money alongside their winnings from e-Sports competitions.

The highest earning e-Sports player at the moment is thought to be a German twenty-seven-year-old male named “Kuro Salehi Tahasomi” or “KuroKy” as he goes by in Dota 2.

Kuro began his e-Sports journey in 2009, beginning with the game “WarCraft”. During this time the team that he was part of was named as the best team of the year, as well as Kuro even being named as the best carry due to him pulling more than his fair share of the team’s weight.

Hosting Cost Comparison Between the FIFA World Cup and e-Sports Tournaments

The costs for different tournaments can vastly range. From a cost as little as a few thousand to a towering cost of multiple billions.

Most people are familiar with the FIFA world cup. A football championship with some of the most iconic and famous sports players in the world, all making millions at a kick of a ball. However not so many are familiar with the e-Sports tournaments and the costs that are behind the hosting and construction of these extremely interesting events.

Both the FIFA world cup and some e-Sports tournaments can cost an unfathomable sum of money. For example, the 2018 FIFA world cup cost an estimated $14 billion overall. Compare this to a League of Legends e-Sports tournament which costs a significant amount less than the FIFA world cup, although still an extremely large amount of money, with an estimated hundreds of millions that the company “Riot Games” spends to make these tournaments as amazing as possible.

Taking the costs into account of how much the tournaments for popular games can cost, it makes you think how this will change in the future. Possibly the costs of e-Sports events will surpass the towering price of specific sports championships, to potentially even almost replacing them entirely. It’ll be extremely interesting to see how these two “sports” giants will change and how they will compare in the close to distant future.
